Vicky helps hikers identify constellations and planets while sharing cultural star stories from around the world. Hikes begin at the Adero Trailhead with telescope viewing in the parking lot at the end of the hike. Do you have a telescope that’s collecting dust? Join the Fountain Hills Library and the Fountain Hills Astronomy Club for a telescope workshop. Bring your telescope and Ted Blank will help you figure out the basics of how to use it. The 7:00 Star Party is for everyone, even if you don’t have a telescope. Vicky Derksen will give a laser tour of the night sky. This event is a great way to celebrate the end of Earth Day.

Pack a picnic or purchase dinner at a food truck and join the Town for fun family-friendly games and water inflatables from 6:00-8:00 PM. SCORPIONS, SCORPIUS & STARS

ADERO TRAILHEAD

Vicky Derksen and the Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills offer a unique opportunity to hunt for scorpions on the ground and in the sky. Learn about the constellation Scorpius while learning about the impact of light pollution on our desert scorpions. End the night by searching for scorpions and looking at the moon through a telescope. Registration is required and is handled by the Town of Fountain Hills. CLICK HERE to register.

THE MILKY WAY & SUMMER TRIANGLE

SEPTEMBER 5 |  8:00-9:00 PM

ADERO TRAILHEAD

Eighty percent of the people on Earth can no longer see the Milky Way from where they live. If the conditions are just right, we might be able to catch a trace of it from the McDowell Mountain Preserve on this night. Vicky Derksen will also show you how to find the Summer Triangle, a special grouping of three bright stars that can be used to find the Milky Way. As always, she’ll share some star stories associated with those three stars and their constellations. This event is in partnership with the Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills. ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE EVENT

The Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, Annular Solar Eclipse will cross North, Central, and South America. It will be visible in parts of the United States, Mexico, and many countries in South and Central America. We will see a partial eclipse in Arizona. Stay tuned for more details our local event.
